Oh You Beautiful Stage

Theatres are places where people make magic out of the ordinary on a daily basis. They are amongst our oldest and most warmly regarded social and architectural heritage, up there with churches as a long-standing institution ‘owned’ by their community: more so than any palace or parliament monument.

The challenge of designing and building a truly successful theatre is as addictive as the theatre experience itself—and equally hard to grasp and to define. The combination of all the facilities in their right relationship and size is only the beginning of the story. To functional suitability must be added the magic of ambience and intimacy, qualities that will lift a room from being a clinical auditorium to a loved theatre and a foyer from being a milling space to a favourite community hang-out.

Oh You Beautiful Stage is a unique guide combining general advice with specific, detailed information about successful theatre design and project processes, put together by passionate theatre design practitioners and operators. Hopefully, this substantially more detailed third edition will help the owners, initiators and designers of theatres to make their renovation, upgrade or new-build projects as successful as possible, having surmounted the equally difficult hurdle of getting their project funded – Virginia Ross – on behalf of the project team.

Oh You Beautiful Stage (OYBS) was first developed in 1997 (2nd edition 2006, 3rd Edition 2012). Since this time OYBS has become a major reference source for performing arts centres, planners, architects and industry specialists in Australia as well as usage internationally. This is the 4th Edition of this valuable resource.

To ensure that OYBS continues to lead the best practice in performing arts centre development , this 4th edition has been fully reviewed. This edition includes an updated layout, regulations updates, updated universal access requirements, updated and reviewed sustainability practices, reviewed and revised specifications in all major operational areas including lighting, audio and staging. In addition, the introductions and descriptions of the primary sections have been revised. The management sections have also been update to ensure they are reflective of the current industry trends . In addition, suggestions from users as to possible improvements have been included.

In addition, every index item has been linked – in previous editions only the main headings were indexed. This means that you can jump to any section from any index – this provides significant improvement in terms of usability.
