The Victorian Association of Performing Arts Centres
Incorporated in 1985, VAPAC was initially founded by a small network of metropolitan and regional performing arts centres to establish touring circuits for shows coming into Victoria.
Over the past 35 years it has grown to become the key peak body for our sector with a current network of over 65 venues based principally throughout Victoria and Tasmania, and several based in NSW and the ACT.
We also have representational membership from highly regarded industry consultants and suppliers who add to the depth and breadth of our collaborative discussions.
The member venues are broadly diverse, varying in scale from tiny independent theatre companies and 100 seat regional venues, to significant metropolitan based theatres and recital halls, servicing audiences drawn from both small rural communities and large regional and metropolitan cities.
Through our annual program of meetings, conferences and events, including the performing arts market Showcase Victoria, we provide significant professional development and touring opportunities for our members.
We are also the proud producers of a nationally recognised benchmarking tool “Oh You Beautiful Stage” used by councils and consultants as a key resource for best practice in theatre design.
VAPAC works hard to build strong relationships with the primary stakeholders in the performing arts industry and has pivotal connections with artists, producers, tour coordinators, peak bodies, government agencies and funders; using our connections through these relationships we work actively to advocate for the capacity of our network to deliver amazing cultural experiences for our Victorian communities.
VAPAC is a collaborative Victorian-based membership organisation representing a diverse range of performing arts venues and theatre professionals. With 80% of our member venues managed by local government and the remainder coming from the education and private sectors, VAPAC is an arts industry service organisation with a uniquely broad reach into the community.
VAPAC represents performing arts venues and theatre professionals engaged in activities including:
The presentation of local & touring performing arts productions
New work commissioning and co-producing
Community cultural development within the arts sector
Non-arts events and functions such as meetings and conferences
Festival delivery & commercial venue hire for the arts sector
Theatre design and performing arts consultancy
We will promote, support and foster a network of performing arts centres. We will promote and strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders and we will provide leadership in the development of the arts industry’s best practice in performing arts programming, presentation, venue management and community cultural development.
