Naarm based company, Na Djinang Circus performed their newest work Of The Land On Which We Meet at the Memo, Healesville in late October. Presented by member venue Yarra Ranges Council, the show formed part of a broader Victoria tour and was also supported by VAPAC’s CaPT funding initiative.
Attracting over 220 people, the show drew it largest audiences to date and the performance culminated with a standing ovation, demonstrating the audience’s deep connection and engagement with the work.
In the days leading up to their performance, Na Djinang immersed themselves in the local community, building connections and sharing stories that enriched the experience for everyone involved. Yarra Ranges coordinated a range of engagement activities with community, which included an insightful yarn at Oonah Belonging Space, a visit to Coranderrk to meet Uncle Dave Wandin and other members of the Wandoon Aboriginal Estate Corporation, an Artist Talk at Healesville Library, and circus workshops for Oonah Youth Group, Misfit Theatre and Healesville Primary School.
While these interactions and activities are aimed attracting audiences, they are also about strengthening skills, confidence and cultural connection for participants and local First Nations people. The success of these types of activities is clear and demonstrated a strong appetite for First Nations programming and the exponential impact of Na Djinang’s engagement with Yarra Ranges locals.
