Zoom In to Zoom Out!

Session Two: The Future of Music in Theatres and Venues

Performing Art Centres are an important part of the music eco-system but operate quite differently to your local live music venue. Metropolitan and regional performing arts centres provide unique community access to live music in remote areas with limited alternatives, complete national touring circuits, offer disability access, are often governed by gender equity and inclusion plans, and can be thought of as more suitable places for younger and older audiences. During lockdown many Centres connected with their audiences by filming and sharing live music performances. There are programming, logistical and budgetary challenges associated that are not COVID-19 related however, so why include it? Can contemporary music be a regular feature on program calendars or do the hurdles mean that the future is one of cover bands and last minute replacement acts for theatre productions?
