Brunswick Mechanics
About the Venue
Next Wave’s home base is at the Brunswick Mechanics on Sydney Road, Brunswick, in Melbourne’s inner north – a multi-purpose performance and arts venue owned by Merri-bek Council.
Next Wave extends a physical location to be a hub and a home to host artists across generations working in expanded and experimental practice and their communities – offering residencies, developments, access and space – from which big ideas can find life and important conversations can occur.
This also means a radically hospitable environment for risk-taking and failure! Focusing on community, experimentation, exchange and collaboration, this is a place to play, connect and cultivate experience.
A home base for Next Wave grounds us and our now-established networks. It reinforces our Melbourne roots as we strengthen our local relationships – with artists, community, peer organisations and our neighbours.
We engender this place with an open-door policy – where all are welcome. Entering this place may be someone’s first encounter with Next Wave – where the first cup of tea in our foyer may lead to new creative relationships that transcend state borders.
Next Wave values meeting people where they are and the legacies embedded in place, and we look to local artists and community to lead and guide our direction. We facilitate opportunities that enable artists to engage meaningfully with the locality and communities of Moreland and its surrounds. We connect our neighbourhood with contemporary ideas as artists and audience. We are actively growing our capacity to commission locally, program responsively, and partner more generously.
