The Victorian Association of Performing Arts Centres (VAPAC) Technical Managers Network recommends a ban on all glitter products 5mm or smaller in performing arts venues, due to serious health and safety risks.
Glitter, a microplastic, poses hazards to both human health and the environment. Once in a venue, glitter is nearly impossible to fully remove, exposing staff, volunteers, and the public to harmful particles that can be inhaled, ingested, or transferred onto surfaces.
Under the OHS Act 2004, venues have a duty of care to protect all users from these risks, for this reason, VAPAC strongly recommends prohibiting the use of glitter products 5mm or smaller in all performing arts venues.
